Herniated discs are usually found in the lower back and can cause a large amount of pain and discomfort. This pain can localize in the lower back as well as travel down into the leg. You may have heard the term slipped or ruptured disc, when referring to a herniated disc. This is a very painful condition but in most cases it can be treated within a few weeks or months without the use of surgery. The symptoms that are associated with a herniated disc may be one or more of the following: back pain, numbness or tingling in the leg and/or foot, weakness in the leg and/or foot, sciatica pain in the leg and/or foot. Chiropractic care involves the use of spinal manipulations along with manual therapy and therapeutic exercises to help alleviate the symptoms. Another technique that is beneficial and that we do in our office is a flexion-distraction technique. This allows gentle stretching of the spine which allows isolation of the affected area while putting the spine in flexion at the same time. This can help to relieve pressure on the nerve to help reduce inflammation and ultimately reduce the pain associated with the disc injury.
